Turning Trash into Treasures

We love doing fun projects on rainy days!!!

In this particular picture, we have used old dresser mirrors and turned them into pieces of art!

  1. You will need an old dresser mirror…  actually any mirror will work…  but the ones that are de-silvering on the back are the best.
  2. Kilz
  3. Latex Paint color of your choice for the background
  4. Paint brushes for applying Kilz and paint
  5. Elmer’s glue diluted about  1/2 and 1/2 with water and mixed well
  6. Lots of small paper cut outs.  I just google victorian flowers, birds, religious icons,  but be creative and make it your theme!!!
  7. Gold leaf
  8. Gold leaf size (adhesive(
  9. Polyurethane

How to:

  1. Remove the mirror from the back board and put a coat of Kilz on the wood (shown above.  Let this dry completely…  okay…  I have been able to get the hair dryer out…
  2. Apply two solid coats of the base color and let this dry completely.  Place the mirror back on the board and trace, with pencil, a very light outline around the mirror.  This is so you will be able to see where the mirror will be and you wont waste your time gluing your pictures behind the mirror.

3.  Cut out your paper images very precisly around the edges of the images.  using a small craft paint brush, apply the diluted glue to the image and randomly place them around the board.  Here is where I like the mirrors that are de-silvering…  tape some of the images on the back of the mirror so that the image can be seen through the de-sivlered areas.  After the glue has dried, give it one to two coats of polyurethane.  When the polyurethane has dried, reattach the mirror to the board!!!  Simple as that!!!
